Tortillas!

The meal plan called for chicken soft tacos, and I decided that I would make homemade tortillas, which I haven't done in a while.  When the kids got home from school, they enthusiastically agreed, and asked to help.

This is how it went:

Using the recipe in Joy of Cooking (my go-to cookbook), I made a double batch of dough, rolled it into 16 balls and let it sit for 30 minutes or so.

Tortillas, pre-rolling

Able Assistant #1 (aka Alec, aka Danger!Boy) took charge of rolling them out:

They See Me Rollin'

Able Assistant #2 (Drew, the Teenager) volunteered to cook them:

This Job Requires Intense Concentration

... and cooked them well.

Not Perfectly Circular

QA (Melissa, my wife) did some random testing to ensure taste and texture met design specs:

She Likes It!

And the Animal Control Specialist (My daughter Fran) made sure the cat did not help himself to any tortillalicious noms:

No, The Cat May Not Have A Tortilla

Everyone topped their tortillas to their taste

Roll Your Own

and a good time was had by all.

  2. Did you use lard? From what I understand about tortillas from living in San Diego, lard is a must.

  3. We used crisco, mainly because we didn't have lard.

  4. Yum. And yum again.

I'm a little surprised that you don't have a tortilla press. I thought they made you buy one once you'd been in Texas for 10 years.

  5. Never got around to getting one. And I kind of enjoy rolling them out by hand.
